5 Free agent targets that would complement Wembanyama on the Pistons
By Will Eudy
The 2022-23 season may not have been filled with many wins on the scoreboard, but it was absolutely a successful campaign for the Detroit Pistons. Finishing the season 17-65, Detroit was able to see what they have in their young players while giving themselves their best chance at landing the first overall pick in the NBA Draft.
The worst possible scenario for the Pistons is that they drop to fifth in the lottery, in which case they would still be able to select a top-level talent to add to their roster. But of course, fans are hoping they end up with the top pick where they would undoubtedly draft the most hyped prospect in many years: Victor Wembanyama.
Many multitalented players have been described as ‘unicorns’ in recent years, but LeBron James put it best when he described Wembanyama as ‘an alien.’ A 7-foot-4 behemoth with an unreal wingspan and a knockdown outside shot, there is no telling what level he may reach as an NBA player.
In the dream scenario where Detroit lands the number one pick and drafts Wemby, they will want to do everything they can to surround him with valuable teammates from day one. Thankfully, outside of the current talent on the Pistons’ roster, there are plenty of players they can pick up this summer that would make sense next to the generational prospect as well.
Detroit Pistons: 5 Free agent targets that would complement Victor Wembanyama
1. Draymond Green
It has been a tumultuous season in the Bay Area for Draymond Green, to say the least. With everything that has gone on and with the Warriors’ current situation, it appears they may be looking to move on from him this summer.
What better landing spot for Green than his hometown team? A Michigan native, Draymond could be an excellent fit with this Pistons team. One thing Detroit is currently in dire need of is better defense, and Green would bring a near-unmatched level of expertise in that area.
Putting Victor Wembanyama in the same locker room as a supremely knowledgeable defender like Draymond Green would do wonders for helping to develop his basketball IQ early. Wemby already has seemingly every physical tool in the book, but adding the head knowledge at a young age as well could be an outright cheat code. Green’s championship experience could go a long way toward turning Detroit into a playoff team in short order.
