Detroit Pistons: 5 Free agent targets that would complement Victor Wembanyama
2. Dillon Brooks
Speaking of good defenders, Dillon Brooks is another upcoming free agent with a pedigree of hard-nosed physicality. He is in a somewhat similar position as Draymond Green, where he is clearly valuable to his team but could still be on the way out the door for different reasons.
For the Grizzlies, it is possible that they will not be able to keep Brooks around past this summer for financial reasons. He is playing on the final year of his three-year, $35 million extension that he signed with Memphis in 2020, and could potentially seek a bigger payday from another team.
If the Pistons are willing to pay him, he could be an excellent fit next to the likes of Victor Wembanyama. While he is not exactly a knockdown shooter, his value as a defender makes up for this.
Putting more game-changing perimeter defenders around Wemby is a no-brainer since it will aid with his development. While the presumed first-overall pick is learning to operate on the interior, having wings that can keep their man in front of them consistently will limit how often Wembanyama has to make up for his teammates’ mistakes.
Like Draymond, Dillon Brooks may bring some added drama with him, but the grit and tenacity that he plays with would be a good trait to rub off on many of the Pistons’ youngsters.
