Detroit Pistons: 5 Free agent targets that would complement Victor Wembanyama

5. Cameron Johnson

Another example of a great three-and-D player that would be extremely valuable in Detroit is Cameron Johnson. Fresh off the Kevin Durant trade that sent him to Brooklyn, Johnson averaged a career-best 16.6 points over the final 25 games of the regular season with the Nets.

This summer, Cam will become a restricted free agent with his four-year rookie contract expiring. This means he will be allowed to explore deals with other teams outside of Brooklyn and even sign a new deal, but the Nets have the power to match any potential offer sheets within 48 hours of Johnson’s signing.

According to sources, his next contract is expected to be worth around $18 million per year. While that is not a cheap price, it could be worth it for Detroit if the Nets decide to go in a different direction.

Making this move for Cam Johnson would ensure he becomes a part of the Pistons’ core in the long term. He was a full-time starter in both Phoenix and Brooklyn this season. With Cade Cunningham back, Johnson could enter Bogdanovic’s starting slot, leaving Victor Wembanyama as his partner in the frontcourt.

Putting Johnson next to Wemby would give Detroit another skilled wing that can play big or small, and would provide needed shooting in lineups with Cunningham and Jaden Ivey. In this scenario, Wembanyama’s three-point shooting in his rookie season would not be a make-or-break factor for the Pistons.
