#2: Overpaying the wrong guy in free agency
Remember when Joe Dumars went out and signed Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva on the first day of free agency, locking them into ridiculous deals that hampered the team for years to come?
I do.
The Gordon signing was so bad that the Pistons ended up having to trade a first-round pick just to get rid of him, a pick that cost them a chance to draft an MVP.
This is my biggest fear for Troy Weaver, as he is under pressure to build a competitive roster, but there aren’t a lot of free agents out there that are great fits on the Detroit Pistons.
Guys like Cameron Johnson look good on paper, but at what cost? Do you really want to be playing a guy who should be the 4th-best player on a good team $25 million a season? The chance for an overpay is there, especially when you consider that some of the best names out there are restricted free agents and the Pistons could be stuck trying to outbid their current teams.
They’d be better off waiting or looking for a trade then signing a guy to huge money who may be nothing more than a role player. If I were Weaver, I’d be looking for a trade (especially if they drop to 4th or 5th in the draft) or to add mid-range free agents for the bench rather than splash out a max deal for a guy who isn’t worth it.
