Detroit Pistons’ disappointment: Marvin Bagley’s lack of development

After getting a big three-year contract from the Pistons, Bagley did not break out the way fans were hoping. A combination of injuries limited Bagley to just 42 games in 2022-23. This was after he played just 48 games the season prior.

Bagley also only played 23.6 minutes per game, the second lowest of his career. In terms of his counting stats, Bagley put up similar numbers to prior seasons of his career. 12.0 points per game, 6.4 rebounds per game and shot 53 percent from the field.

The disappointing season for Bagley comes down to his lack of development. Bagley shot just 29 percent from three-point range which was a big improvement he needed to make heading into this year. At 24-years-old, it looks like this is player Marvin Bagley will be, which is by no means a bad player, just not a player who can be a big piece of a team that is contending in the NBA.
