Detroit Pistons: 3 offseason scenarios with the top-3 picks

#2: Scoot Henderson

It’s entirely possible that the Detroit Pistons would take someone else with the second pick, but for the sake of argument, I’m putting Scoot Henderson here.

Henderson may be the more talented player, but his fit is not as immediately clear, though if you think he’s the best guy, that shouldn’t matter.

But it would change the Pistons’ strategy in trades and free agency, as they would still have a big hole on the wing. In this case, they need to go after the best, most versatile wing defender available, which may be Jerami Grant.

In this scenario, Detroit spends most of their cap space on Grant so goes into the season looking something like this:

  • Scoot Henderson/Killian Hayes
  • Cade Cunningham/Jaden Ivey
  • Jerami Grant/Alec Burks/Isaiah Livers
  • Bojan Bogdanovic/Isaiah Stewart
  • Jalen Duren/James Wiseman/Marvin Bagley III

This is a weird team. You can argue away about who should be playing point, who should be starting and what position all of these guys actually play, so the new coach would have a whole lot to work out.

The Pistons would always have a ball handler and creator on the floor with guys who can shoot, and they could fulfill Troy Weaver’s dream of going jumbo at times. Grant would have to be doing some heavy lifting defensively and it would be tough to find all of these guys minutes.

The argument against Scoot has nothing to do with talent really, it just makes things complicated unless you want to move Cade Cunningham to the wing position, which would not be ideal. This is why many believe the Pistons would just take Miller with the second pick or try to package it in a trade.
