Looking back at the 2022-2023 Detroit Pistons Part 1: The Rookies
The 2022-2023 season for the Detroit Pistons was always going to be one focused on development, even if there were some other intentions at the beginning. Hoping to compete for a play-in spot and turn the corner on the Pistons rebuild, General Manager Troy Weaver collected a few veteran players in the off-season. With a few experienced veterans for stability, a budding star in Cade Cunningham, a young core in development and a few lottery picks in Jalen Duren and Jaden Ivey, the season began a bit brighter than how the last season ended. There was some excitement and enthusiasm around this team to begin the 2022-2023 season and there were many indications that the season would be different than the previous one.
As we all know, even the best laid out plans don’t always play out how we envision them. With franchise player Cade Cunningham going down early in the season to injury, the development of the Detroit Pistons’ young players became the sole priority. Looking back at this season with the perspective of developmental progress, did the Detroit Pistons rookie class make progress?
(Players no longer with the team will not be included here. Development for another team isn’t exactly part of the Pistons’ long or short term plans.)
