NBA Draft Lottery primer: What is at stake for the Detroit Pistons?

City and Coach

When LeBron James first left the city of Cleveland, it was actually devastating to the economy of downtown Cleveland. It’s no hyperbole to say that Victor Wembanyama could have a similar effect on the economy of Detroit.

One executive estimated that he’d bring $500 million in value to the franchise that gets him, which will not only benefit the team (obviously) but the surrounding area, as the Pistons would be the hottest ticket in town and all of the restaurants, bars and vendors around Little Caesar’s Arena would benefit.

The lowly Detroit Pistons would suddenly be one of the biggest draws in the NBA as fans flock to see this 7-foot-4 video game.

You may also remember that the Pistons are still looking for a head coach and landing that #1 pick suddenly makes them the best job on the market, which could give them their choice of coaches.

It’s a pretty attractive job right now, but adding Wembanyama might make a guy like Monty Williams choose Detroit over Milwaukee, giving Detroit one of the top candidates.

It’s not just the roster that will be affected by the addition of Wembanyama, and landing the #1 pick would have a ripple effect that would change everything from the coaching search to the economy of Detroit.
