Detroit Pistons: Ranking available free agent wing defenders in 2023

#1: Dillon Brooks

After the way, Brooks’ time in Memphis ended, he may not be getting the bag he once thought he would in free agency.

You can talk about Brooks’ inefficient shooting (he’s terrible) and the fact that he can be a distraction at times, but the man just made the NBA All-Defensive team, so he can defend.

The question is whether that defense is enough to make up for what Brooks takes off the table, which is that he takes too many bad shots, wants a bigger role on offense (yikes) and talks enough trash to be part of professional wrestling.

There were early reports that the Pistons would pursue Brooks, and it wouldn’t be surprising, as his toughness and defense on the wing are much needed, but Troy Weaver would need assurances that Brooks buys into what the Pistons are building and that he won’t be more trouble than he’s worth.

Personally, I would pass on Brooks, as I don’t think his defense makes up for his offense and antics, but he’s the best wing defender available this summer, so Detroit will probably kick the tires and see what it would take.

If the deal is team-friendly enough, that changes things, so don’t be surprised if his name comes up.
