When the Detroit Pistons landed coach Monty Williams, it may have changed their outlook for the offseason.
They may be more inclined to try and make a big trade to land a player who is ready to contribute now rather than adding two more rookies to a roster that already has a lot of young talent. Hiring Williams doesn’t necessarily mean they are going to make such a trade, but Troy Weaver was already under some pressure to build a competitive roster and that hasn’t changed.
The Detroit Pistons have a glaring need on the wing, where their defense was abysmal this past season. A two-way wing player will be high atop their wish list this offseason, and after falling to 5th in the 2023 NBA Draft, getting one via trade might be more appealing.
OG Anunoby is a name that has been mentioned in possible trades, as Toronto could be looking to pair Scottie Barnes with a better fit. They still don’t have a coach, could lose Fred VanVleet, Gary Trent Jr. and Jakob Poetl, and it’s possible that the Raptors will decide that now is a good time to cash in and start rebuilding around Barnes.
So we’re assuming that Anunoby is available here, but that may not be the case depending on Toronto’s plans.
What would it take to get him? What would be too much? Too little? Here’s a trade of each type.
Detroit Pistons: 1 Too little, 1 too much, 1 just right trade package for OG Anunoby
Too little
Let’s start with a trade that definitely won’t get it done. It’s hard to imagine any scenario in which the Detroit Pistons could trade for OG Anunoby without including the 5th pick in the draft, but if the Raptors wanted a player who could help them now instead, the Pistons could throw this at them:
Wiseman does theoretically help them absorb the potential loss of Jakob Poetl in free agency and he is young enough to be an interesting fit with Barnes going forward. They would get Bogdanovic to boost their shooting, the 31st pick in the draft and a future first from the Pistons.
This would all hinge on what the Raptors thought of Wiseman, but it’s likely some other team would be able to put more on the table in the form of draft assets, as a pick in the distant future will have little appeal to teams trying to improve right now.
