Just right
Given that All-Defensive wings who can shoot the 3-ball are coveted by every team in the NBA, the Raptors would have a line of suitors if they put OG Anunoby on the market, including a few teams that have better picks than the Pistons in the draft they could trade.
Detroit could be a draft trade line behind teams like Portland and Houston, who might also be interested in Anunoby’s services. So is there a package that Detroit would be willing to part with that would be enough to entice Toronto?
The Raptors get a top-5 pick and James Wiseman to put with Scottie Barnes. They don’t have to overpay for Jakob Poetl on the free-agent market and can see what Wiseman can do in a bigger role at center.
They also pick up a future first round pick for their troubles.
I’m sure some fans in Detroit would see this as an overpay and would rather just roll the dice on the #5 pick, which I can understand. But the Pistons would get their two-way wing without having to gamble in the draft and add another young player who might not be ready to contribute right away. They clear their logjam at center and give up a pick at a time when they actually hope to be good. Anunoby is only 25-years-old, so he still fits their timeline, so this wouldn’t be a move that mortgaged the future completely.
Anunoby raises their ceiling to play-in contender right away, and they’d have the inside track to signing him to an extension. He’s a great fit with Cade Cunningham and Jaden Ivey and is just entering his prime, so they’d be paying top dollar for his best years.
I don’t know if either team would say yes to this, but it would at least be a starting point for a deal if the Detroit Pistons were willing to give up their pick and Toronto was looking to get younger around Barnes.
