Will any Detroit Pistons be on the 2023 FIBA World Cup roster?
The Detroit Pistons have a young core of players that includes Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey, Jalen Duren and Isaiah Stewart (pending).
They are hoping for big leap years from all of them in terms of development and all of their young guys will be putting in the work to get there.
Over the years we’ve seen young players benefit greatly from playing in international competitions like the Olympics and FIBA World Cup, as practicing daily with the best players in the world is one way that iron sharpens irons.
The 2023 FIBA World cup is coming up soon and will run from August 25th to September 10th, with most of the roster already chosen*:
But there are still three spots to fill, so will any Detroit Pistons end up on the roster?
Will any Detroit Pistons be on the 2023 FIBA World Cup roster?
As you can see, the FIBA World Cup roster already has nine players committed, with a solid mixture of young and veteran talent.
It has playmaking with Brunson and Haliburton, defense with Jackson Jr., Bridges and Kessler and veteran leadership with Portis. The team already has big-time scorers in Edwards and Ingram and a scrappy bench player in Reaves.
When you look at the Detroit Pistons, there are three potential players that make sense for this team. The first is Cade Cunningham, whose game would fit this type of team perfectly, as he is a Swiss-Army knife who could do whatever the team needed.
But he is coming off a missed season and still recovering from an injury, so it seems highly unlikely he’d accept an offer that could disrupt his offseason progress.
Jaden Ivey could be an option, but it’s hard to see him getting any type of run and he doesn’t provide the type of 3-point shooting that the team might covet.
Isaiah Stewart would be a great fit, as other than Portis, this team doesn’t really have an enforcer to do the dirty work on the inside. But Beef Stew is not viewed as a top young player, so they can probably do better.
If Cunningham were healthy, I’d just put him, Scottie Brooks and Jalen Green on this team and call it a day, but with him still working towards a comeback, it’s not likely that we see any Detroit Pistons on the FIBA World Cup roster, which is a shame, as it would be great for any of them to get this type of experience.
*Since the writing of this, Cameron Johnson has also agreed to join the team, leaving just two spots open.
