The Detroit Pistons have signed a new coach, drafted two more first-round picks and traded for Joe Harris and Monte Morris.

It’s not the dream offseason some fans were hoping for, but they added some talent and did so without sacrificing any future financial flexibility. I know financial pragmatism is not sexy, but that doesn’t mean these moves were bad.

These transactions may win over Tom Gores’ accountant (who is probably asking him who Dewayne Dedmon is) but are hardly exciting for fans who are sick of losing.

But at least Troy Weaver didn’t go out and sign another draft bust that he hopes will be good if he just has a change of scenery….at least not yet.

Detroit Pistons predicted to pursue another draft bust

Troy Weaver’s modus operandi as a GM so far has been to try and acquire elite talent via the draft, look for undervalued players, and to take swings on allegedly “high ceiling” guys that haven’t panned out for one reason or another.

His love of busts continued last season with the additions of James Wiseman (pending) and RJ Hampton (gone), two guys who have yet to live up to their draft status.

They added to a list that includes Dennis Smith Jr, Josh Jackson, Marvin Bagley III and Kevin Knox, none of whom have really worked out for Detroit.

We were all hoping that would change this offseason, but the right deals were not there and Weaver elected to pass on giving up their long-term financial flexibility to sign guys like Cam Johnson, which is probably smart.

Could that lead to taking a flyer on another bust? One publication thinks so.
