Detroit Pistons predicted to pursue another draft bust

Bleacher Report put out an article recently that guessed each team’s top free-agent target, including the Detroit Pistons, who currently only have the mid-level to spend in free agency.

They did get a few of these right so far (including Grant Williams to Dallas), and the guy they chose for Detroit was Darius Bazley.

Bazley is a 6-foot-8 forward who was drafted 23rd by the OKC Thunder in the 2019 NBA Draft and was traded to the Suns last season for Dario Saric and a second-round pick.

He showed some big-time promise for the Thunder in the 2020-21 season, when he averaged 13.7 points and 7.2 rebounds per game, albeit with terrible shooting splits on a very bad team. Knee problems have limited his availability, so Bazley remains an athletic curiosity that hasn’t done much in the league, but is still perceived to have some talent.

Sound familiar?

Bazley definitely fits the mold of the guys Weaver has pursued in the past, but that doesn’t mean the Pistons should do it again.
