Detroit Pistons: 5 hot takes from Summer League 2023
Ausar Thompson is going to win Rookie of the Year
Ok, so probably not.
Every other rookie will have an uphill battle for this award, as Victor Wembanyama is going to be getting a lot of attention every time he moves.
But the field behind Wembanyama is wide open and a lot can happen. Thompson has long-shot odds, but has a couple of things working in his favor.
He’s going to be playing a big role whether he’s in the starting lineup right away or not, can fill the stat sheet, and we’ve already seen that he can provide some highlights that are going to end up on TV and getting passed around social media.
Due to the fact that the Detroit Pistons only won 17 games last season, they have the chance to improve more than any team next year, and if they double their wins and sniff the play-in tournament, Thompson will likely get a lot of credit for the improvement, particularly if Detroit jumps into the top half of the league in defense.
Let’s be real, the award is Wembanyama’s to lose, but anything could happen, and if the Pistons end up with a better record than the Spurs with Thompson having a huge season, he’ll be in with a chance.
A whole lot of “ifs” there, which is why those odds are so long.
