Pistons news: Sasser’s huge night, Killian on borrowed time?
The Detroit Pistons won their 5th Summer League game to push their record to 4-1 overall.
They got a huge night from Marcus Sasser, who set this year’s Summer League high by dropping 40 points on 16-of-25 shooting including knocking down five of his nine shots from long range.
Sasser showed off his whole arsenal and gave a glimpse of why the Pistons were so excited to trade up to get him in the first round:
I always have to add the Summer League disclaimer, as well as the fact that it is doubtful that the rookie comes close to getting 25 shots in a real game next season. But he showed he can run the offense, get his own shot and hound the ball on defense, so Sasser is going to get a chance to compete for a rotation spot in training camp.
And his chances of making that rotation may be better by the time it starts.
Detroit Pistons: Will Killian Hayes be traded?
One of the big questions hanging over the Detroit Pistons this offseason is what their guard rotation might look like.
They added veteran Monte Morris and rookie Marcus Sasser to a group that already included Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey, Killian Hayes and Alec Burks. It appears as though Hayes may be the odd man out, as he is on an expiring deal and hasn’t shot well enough yet to be in the rotation of a good NBA team.
According to The Athletic (SUBSCRIPTION), Killian Hayes was recently included in trade discussions with Dallas, a team that Detroit has been talking trades with since midway through last season.
Though he and Sasser are not directly competing for a spot, adding another young guard who can shoot didn’t help his case, especially after Detroit went out and got Monte Morris, a sure-handed veteran who has shot 39 percent from 3-point range for his career.
This doesn’t necessarily mean Hayes is going to get traded, but this is the first time in his career that he’s had real competition for minutes against players that aren’t fringe G-League prospects or journeyman veterans. So nothing is guaranteed for Killian, and Detroit may look to relieve their logjam at guard at some point this offseason.
