The Detroit Pistons have had plenty of legends suit up for them over the years, names that will forever be attached to teams like the Bad Boys of the 80’s and 90’s and the Goin’ to Work squad from the 2000’s.
But strangely, when it comes to one particular stat, the Pistons don’t have a rich history.
They’ve not recorded many triple doubles as a franchise, to the point that Mason Plumlee actually cracks the top-10 when it comes to career triple doubles for Detroit.
So who leads the franchise, and will we soon see that record toppled?
Detroit Pistons all-time leaders in triple doubles
Here are the top-10 Detroit Pistons in career triple doubles and and the number they recorded:
- Grant Hill (29)
- Isiah Thomas (5)
- Bob Lanier (5)
- Blake Griffin (3)
- Dave Bing (3)
- Dave DeBusschere (3)
- Cade Cunningham (2)
- Mason Plumlee (2)
- Reggie Jackson (2)
- Ben Wallace (1)
As you can see, Grant Hill leads the way and has more career triple doubles for the Pistons than the next nine guys put together. Hill would have certainly had more had he stayed healthy, as he was an all-purpose machine for the Pistons, nearly averaging a triple double in his second and third seasons. Hill averaged 21.4 points, 9 rebounds and 7.3 assists in his third season with Detroit.
I found it interesting that Cade Cunningham has already cracked the top-10 and has a good chance to be atop it by the end of his career.
Cade Cunningham will lead the Detroit Pistons in triples doubles
Cade Cunningham has only played 76 games for the Detroit Pistons and has already logged two triple doubles and there will be plenty more to come.
With more shooters around him this season, expect Cade’s assist numbers to go up and for him to have plenty of games with double-digit assists next season. As Cade continues to get stronger, I expect his rebounding numbers to go up as well, so we could see him with double-digit triple doubles by the end of next season.
Health will play a factor of course, but Cunningham has an all-around game that is similar to Grant Hill’s, and has a chance to rack up the triple doubles in his career with Detroit.
