The Detroit Pistons headed into the offseason with some important decisions to make regarding their own players.

The 2020 draft class is eligible for rookie extensions this summer, and the Pistons have three players in Isaiah Stewart, Killian Hayes and James Wiseman who were all up for long-term extensions to stay with the team.

We already got the answer on Stewart, who the Pistons gave a four-year extension, but Hayes and Wiseman are still up in the air.

It seems extremely unlikely that Detroit would offer either one of them an extension, as Killian Hayes hasn’t been good enough and James Wiseman hasn’t played enough for the Pistons to make that kind of long-term commitment.

It’s possible that Detroit will settle this by trading one or both of them before the season, but if not, here are some important dates for the team and for these two players.

Important dates for the Pistons, Killian Hayes and James Wiseman

There are some things in August for fans to look forward to, including the FIBA World Cup and the release of the NBA schedule.

But the most important dates, especially as it pertains to these two players, come in October.

  • October 3: Training camp opens

There should be some interesting training camp battles and both Killian Hayes and James Wiseman will be at the heart of them.

  • October 5: Preseason begins
  • October 12: Pistons play in Montreal as part of the NBA’s Canada Series
  • October 23: Rosters set. This will be the final day for Hayes and Wiseman to sign extensions, otherwise, they will go into next season on expiring contracts and be restricted free agents at the end of the season.
  • October 24: The regular season begins

This season could be a turning point for both players, as they will either improve and possibly cement themselves as pieces of the future core, or be traded to other teams or let walk at the end of the year.

The Detroit Pistons don’t have to make their decisions now, as extending either of these players would be foolish before they’ve shown they are headed on the right developmental path. But if neither of them are playing well (or much) by the trade deadline, you can bet that their names are going to be mentioned in rumors.
