The 3 most overpaid Detroit Pistons for next season
James Wiseman: $12.1 million
Rookie contracts have a chance to be the best values in the league if you can find a young player who starts producing right away. But they can be some of the worst values in the league if you have a guy in a high salary slot who doesn’t provide much, which is the case so far with James Wiseman.
Wiseman will be the 4th highest-paid Piston next season, making more money than Cade Cunningham, Alec Burks, Monte Morris, Jaden Ivey and Jalen Duren, all guys who have accomplished more in the league than Wiseman.
Consider that Wiseman will almost be making more than Ivey and Duren combined next season even though he has only played in 84 games in his 3-year career. Wiseman has shown some promise in certain areas, but at best will be a backup center next season making over $12 million, not an ideal use of cap space.
When you see players in Wiseman’s salary range, they are either high draft picks like Paolo Banchero who are already producing, or veterans who have paid their dues in the league. Wiseman is neither, and unless he shows out this season, he may be one of the few players to take a pay cut on his second deal.
