Although it’s Ausar Thompson’s first year in the league, he’ll need to contribute from the jump for the Detroit Pistons to succeed, and he’s shown he’s capable of contributing at an NBA level.

Last season, the Pistons didn’t have a starting-caliber, athletic small forward who could affect the opponent’s best wing while also switching onto faster guards. In fact, Detroit hasn’t had that in a long time. The players the Detroit Pistons have had at the position since Tayshaun Prince make for a grim list. Ausar Thompson should solve this issue while contributing offensively.

This season, the Detroit Pistons will look to Thompson to play stingy perimeter defense. He’ll need to use his length to force opponents to drive and his speed to push them in the direction he desires. He should disrupt passing and driving lanes and help the team defend on a string.

His defense should help Jaden Ivey and Killian Hayes cut down on their fouls and help Marvin Bagley III and James Wiseman remain near the paint, covering space as much as an individual.

Bojan Bogdanovic doesn’t have the foot speed to stay in front of his man, but he plays fundamentally sound defense. Thompson’s presence will allow Bogey to close out without worrying about the man getting past him.

Thompson’s passing ability gives the Detroit Pistons another playmaker, someone who can drive and either dish or score. The post players and Bogey, Burks, Livers, and newcomer Joe Harris should benefit from an additional passer. The floor should be larger than it’s been in years, and Pistons players should be constantly moving without the ball.

Thompson will need to improve his shooting as he adjusts to the speed and physicality of the NBA. His season will have its ups and downs, but overall, his presence should make the other players on the team better on both ends.

This year will be an interesting one in the ongoing development of the Detroit Pistons, but win or lose, Thompson’s competitive nature and continued development should lead to great things.
