The Detroit Pistons’ biggest move of the summer was signing John Collins. It was a fine move, but it didn’t move the needle too much. If they want to be a legitimate threat in the Eastern Conference next season, they may have to be serious buyers at the trade deadline. Cade Cunningham needs some help running the offense, and he doesn’t have that right now.
Offensive woes were the Pistons’ main problem in the postseason last year. When Cunningham didn’t have it going, they got stuck in the mid, relying on players performing way above their pay grade to be competitive. Adding a guy who can help in that area should have been a priority this summer, but outside of Isaiah Joe, they didn’t make a deal like that.
So, even though it’s way too early to make trade-deadline predictions, here are three players the Pistons should be keeping tabs on all the way through the February deadline.
3 Future Pistons trade targets to help Cade Cunningham
1. Norman Powell
The Chicago Bulls signed Norman Powell in free agency this summer. He was a potential target for the Pistons, but they lost out on him, deciding to go in a different direction.
However, Powell’s deal has a team option for the 2027-28 season, meaning it’s basically an expiring contract. That’s a good deal for the Pistons to trade for.
Adding Powell’s three-point shooting and scoring to the lineup would be ideal, and if the Bulls are selling by the deadline (not all that unlikely), he could be a perfect target.
2. Trey Murphy III
Ah yes, the yearly tradition of the Pistons potentially trading for Trey Murphy III. It’s a tale as old as time, yet he’s too good to leave off this list.
If the New Orleans Pelicans finally decide that this is the year for them to clean house, the Pistons should be right there. Adding Murphy to the mix would seriously help Cunnigham on the offensive end.
Murphy is one of the best three-point shooters in the league, and he has just enough offensive creation to be a perfect addition to the Pistons’ current lineup.
3. Tyler Herro
There were a ton of rumblings that the Pistons could trade for Tyler Herro this summer as a third team in the Giannis Antetokounmpo deal. However, just because they didn’t doesn’t mean they should forget about him.
The Milwaukee Bucks could go in a bunch of different directions this year. But they probably won’t be good. So perhaps they could decide to sell at the deadline.
If they do, the Pistons should consider trading for Herro, especially if he’s having a solid year. He’d pair nicely next to Cunningham.
