Pistons guard Cade Cunningham received an unexpected question in his press conference for his second All-Star selection: Would he be willing to pay Isaiah Stewart's fines for his recent 7-game suspension? The question clearly caught him off guard, but Cade composed himself and answered that he would. Despite the negative effects of the suspension, Cade made it clear that he appreciates Stewart's intensity on the court and wants to continue encouraging that mindset.
Cade Cunningham says he’d pay Isaiah Stewart's $724K worth of fines:

“I would. That's my brother man. He's the man I wouldn't trade him for the world.”
Respect. (h/t @ohnohedidnt24)pic.twitter.com/M0fVFdMHuV
The Pistons stand behind Isaiah Stewart at all costs
In other interviews during All-Star Weekend, Cade was also quick to shout out Stewart for his efforts in turning the Pistons around. Detroit's biggest advantage over other teams this season has been their defense and physicality, both of which are bolstered by Stewart's playstyle. Behind those pillars and Cade's own play, the Pistons are having their best season in decades despite playing unconventionally for the modern NBA.
Stewart is now the longest-tenured Piston, having been drafted to Detroit in 2020. His leadership and consistency since then, even through some historically bad seasons, has been a major force in guiding the Pistons to their current position. Cade emphasized the importance of his contributions both on and off the court.
"[Stewart]'s just been through the mud with the team, never changed, just continued to work. He's had so many different roles that he's had to play. But every year, he just works his tail off and he finds a way to contribute."Cade Cunningham
Through it all, Stewart is a key cornerstone for the Pistons. He's integral to the team's identity with his spectacular defense and growing offensive skillset. But most importantly, he's a leader of the team's culture that has been their most important attribute this season. As other Eastern rivals load up for a playoff push, the Pistons will need Stewart at his best to fend them off.
During the recent controversy regarding Stewart (and All-Star Jalen Duren) receiving suspensions for a fight in Charlotte, the Pistons have done a good job of presenting a united front. Often times, coaches will express disappointment in their players when such a situation occurs. But JB Bickerstaff came out in full support of his players for defending themselves and each other.
Now, the franchise superstar and leader in Cunningham also speaks out for his teammate. Stewart doesn't have the best reputation across the league for his repeat history with physical altercations. But his reputation within his team clearly could not be any better. Being able to withstand a major suspension to a key player like him will bode well for the Pistons' chemistry in the back half of the season.
If Isaiah Stewart continues to earn the respect and support of his star player and coach, he'll have a place on the Pistons for a long time.
