The Pistons' main concern this offseason must be adding more creation to take pressure off Cade Cunningham. One former Piston who can fit the bill surprisingly well is Quentin Grimes, who played for the 76ers this season. Grimes has been an up-and-down player in the last few years, but shown lethal shot-creating ability when given the chance.
Quentin Grimes can give the Pistons a nice boost
Grimes was once in Detroit three seasons ago, but never found his groove on the Pistons as he came back from injury. Since then, he's bounced around teams but ended up in Philadelphia with some opportunity at the end of the 2025 season. In those games, he shone with the 76ers' top stars out due to injury.
In 28 games with the Sixers to finish the 2025 season, Grimes averaged nearly 22 points per game while shooting 47% from the field and 37% from three. But this season, his averages and efficiency dropped as he was forced to play a lesser role alongside Philadelphia's usual stars. He averaged just 13 points per game while shooting 45% from the field and 33% from three.
Still, Grimes continued to flash some elite shot-creation ability, especially inside the arc. He's hit some tough shots in his career, created entirely out of nothing by his handle and scoring package alone. Grimes is far from a consistent star with the ball in his hands, but offers more upside as a scorer than most of the Pistons' current roster. He should also be far cheaper than marquee names on the market.
There are some warning signs with Grimes
Of course, Grimes brings some concerns of his own too. For one, he entered a lengthy contract dispute with the 76ers last season during his restricted free agency, so he could demand a big contract this summer too. The Pistons can't afford to dish out big money for a player who hasn't consistently shown his ability to contribute as a starter.
Grimes' inexplicable 3-point shooting dropoff when he moved off-ball is also considering. The Pistons' ideal guard addition this offseason would be equally capable of leading the offense themselves or playing alongside Cade Cunningham. Grimes' struggles as a supporting piece don't bode well for his fit alongside Cade on a Pistons roster looking to compete right away.
Finally, Grimes had a disappointing playoff run this year. After some solid outings against the Celtics in the first round, Grimes averaged less than 5 points per game in his last 6 playoff games - including a 4-0 series loss to the Knicks. The Pistons need players who can elevate them in the playoffs, rather than contributing to the same disappearing act we saw this year.
