Controversial free agent target could be the perfect upside swing for Pistons

Detroit has every reason to at least attempt this signing.

The Detroit Pistons roster is far from being finalized two days into the start of free agency.

Up to this point, the only additions Detroit has made outside of their NBA Draft class have been the signing of free agent John Collins and the acquisition of sharpshooter Isaiah Joe.

Still, the Pistons have yet to find Cade Cunningham, the second option the team seemed destined to be in the market for this offseason, and while the team's newest additions certainly add an offensive boost, the moves haven't completely removed the burden that lies on their star guard's shoulders.

Looking at the options left on the market in free agency, there aren't many names that stand out who can deliver Detroit what they're looking for, at least not at the value they're looking to spend, which is why the trade market has always seemed like the best path to improve their roster.

However, one free agent on the market could be the perfect swing that offers enough upside to make a signing worth the risk, but it likely won't be a move the fanbase can rally behind...at first.

Pistons could take a swing on Bradley Beal

Bradley Beal is clearly not the superstar player he once was during his time with the Washington Wizards, and his stretch between the Phoenix Suns and LA Clippers has all but proved that.

The 33-year-old was at one time a premier scorer in the league, and although his injury issues and rough stretch of play over the last few years have drastically changed the perception of him around the league, the idea of Beal going from one of the most productive scorers in the league to a negative asset is crazy to say the least.

Obviously, the situation is everything for players in this league, and not to say that the Suns or the Clippers are the reason that Beal's production has gone down, but without confidence, it's hard for any player to put his best foot forward.

Beal was the scapegoat in Phoenix, and an injury ended his Clippers tenure before it ever really started.

Sure, signing in Detroit likely won't turn him back into the 30- point-per-game monster he was in Washington, but there's enough upside there to at least justify checking in on his market and flirting with potentially adding him to the roster alongside Cunningham, given his veteran experience and the possibility that he could put his struggles in the past.
