Crushing trade could still have a fairytale ending for the Pistons

Bring Dre home!

Andre Drummond has always talked about how much he loves Detroit, and if things break right this summer, he could end his career where it started with the Pistons.

Detroit is up against some tough decisions this summer, one of which is what to do with all of their centers. They have to decide how much they are willing to pay Jalen Duren, and that number could have a ripple effect that leads to the Pistons trading Isaiah Stewart.

With Paul Reed ready to step into a larger backup role, the Pistons may need a cheap third center, and they’d be hard pressed to find a better one than Andre Drummond.

Andre Drummond to the Pistons would be a happy ending to a tough trade

It wouldn’t be easy to trade Beef Stew, but bringing Dre home would soften the blow, and it is something that he seems to want.

In a recent interview with N3ON, Drummond talked about how devastated he was after being traded from Detroit and said explicitly that he’d like to retire in the Motor City:

"If I could, I would retire in Detroit," he said. "I feel like that would definitely be my final [team] for me."

It never set well with me how some Pistons fans treated Drummond on his way out and after he was traded, as he has never shown anything but love for Detroit and it’s not his fault the Pistons were lousy at building teams back then.

It would be great to see justice for Dre in this regard, as I am sure he’d be an instant fan favorite again as a veteran returning on a minimum deal. And this wouldn’t just be some kind of charity.

Andre Drummond is actually good

Drummond is 32 years old and just had a great season for Philadelphia as a backup and spot starter playing nearly 20 minutes per game. He averaged 6.4 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 1.3 assists in that time.

Dre is still an effective rebounder and sneaky-good defender who gets his hands on a lot of passes. He’s not near his prime physically but is still a reliable player who has picked up some tricks over the years, including shooting the 3-ball.

It’s wild, but Dre hit nearly 36 percent of his 3-point shots this season, and he was launching 1.4 of them a game, so it wasn’t a complete fluke.

He’d be a great insurance policy if the Pistons have to trade Stewart and are looking for a cheap center. It would also be a great story for Drummond to play in Detroit again, which is something that he has talked about since he was first traded.
