Daniss Jenkins’ recent breakout has shifted the whole dynamic of the Pistons, and it’s easing Cade Cunningham’s workload as the offensive centerpiece. Jenkins is showing his worth as an on-ball playmaker, which allows Cade to rest more or play off the ball when he’s on the court. This subtle shift in the Pistons’ offense can go a long way in conserving Cade’s energy through the regular season and playoffs.

Jenkins is a perfect backcourt mate for Cade

In his last 5 games, all starts, Jenkins has found success with and without Cade. He’s playing the perfect hybrid role that was originally meant for Jaden Ivey. His offensive versatility as a shooter and slasher allows him to take some plays flying off screens for open looks, only to have the ball in his hands on a pick-and-roll the next.

This diverse skillset also allows Cade to find more balance. Throughout the season, the lack of a proper secondary creator has forced Cade to dominate the ball as an initiator. But Jenkins is now changing that high usage rate.

It’ll be a welcome change for Cade, who’s averaging a career high in field goal attempts per game. Although Cade’s been getting to the rim better than ever, his 3-point shooting is down this season. He’s shooting just 28% from three overall and an even worse 18% on wide open threes.

But Cade has historically been a much better shooter off the catch than off the dribble. Jenkins can get him some more spot-up looks and help him get into a groove with his open attempts. If Cade can get his shooting back to normal - even 35% from deep - it’ll be a scary proposition for the rest of the league.

It’s not the first time Cade has paired well with another proper point guard. Last season, the Pistons made a push going into the playoffs with Dennis Schröder backing up and playing alongside Cade. Schröder was able to stabilize the offense without Cade and allow him to work off-ball at times. Now Jenkins is filling the same role to perfection.

Making the game easier for Cade should be a top priority for the Pistons. It’s no wonder that his only major injury of the season came in the fourth quarter of a tightly contested game where he had to carry the offense. It was also on a hard drive to the rim, where contact is bound to occur.

If Jenkins can get Cade easier scoring opportunities from outside, he’ll preserve his superstar’s health for the long run. That’s exactly what Cade has needed from the Pistons for years now.
