Dennis Schroder is a lock for an unlikely honor that will shock Pistons fans

Dennis Schroder, Hall of Famer? Not as crazy as you think.

Fans of the Detroit Pistons may not think of backup point guard Dennis Schroder as a candidate for the Hall of Fame, but after winning another title and MVP with Germany, he may be a lock.

Germany beat Turkey for the 2025 EuroBasket title, with Schroder taking home the MVP honors after averaging over 20 points and seven assists in the tournament. Schroder turned it up in the last two games and dropped 12 assists in the Final, which was the most in a EuroBasket final in three decades.

Although Schroder was very good in his role for the Pistons last season, this might be shocking to some fans who view him more as a journeyman backup, not a player who can lead a team to titles.

The Hall of Fame has been a hot topic of debate recently among Pistons fans as we discussed the viability of Blake Griffin’s case. I’m sure most fans would put Griffin in the Hall over Schroder, but when you look at the full picture, Schroder might actually have the stronger case.

Dennis Schroder: Hall of Famer? It depends

People often forget that the Naismith Hall of Fame takes into account a player’s entire career, not just that of college or the NBA, so while Schroder may not have the NBA resume, his international accolades are impressive.

This is guy who has played for about half the NBA at this point, and while he’s always been solid, you wouldn’t think of him as a Hall of Famer.

But Germany Dennis Schroder is different, and he’s been dominating on the international stage since he first made his debut for his home country back in 2014.

Since then, he has won bronze at EuroBasket, which was Germany’s first medal in nearly two decades. Schroder led Germany to a World Cup title (where he was also named MVP), took 4th in the Paris Olympics (where he was named to the Olympic All-Star team) and now has won EuroBasket 2025 while being named MVP again.

Schroder has always been best when he’s allowed to dominate the ball, look for cracks in the defense with dribble penetration and control most of the offense, something that he doesn’t get to do much of in the NBA.

But for Germany, he’s the man, even on a team with Franz Wagner, and gets to play the style that has been most effective for him in his career.

Most fans wouldn’t consider a player like Schroder to be a Hall of Famer, but he’s been impressive in international play, which counts towards his overall resume and may make him a lock, especially if he bags another medal or two before his career is over.
