Pistons are better positioned to land Tyler Herro and have the perfect offer

The Detroit Pistons didn’t land Tyler Herro as part of the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade but still have ways to get him.

The trade won’t be official until the first week of July, so even though it was announced as a one-to-one deal, it may not end up that way, especially if the Bucks want to max out their draft assets and young players in the deal.

The Pistons reportedly walked away from the deal, likely because the price was too steep, and if I had to guess, that was because Milwaukee wanted both Ron Holland II and Detroit’s 21st pick in tonight’s draft.

The Pistons weren’t going to give up both, and they shouldn’t, but if the Bucks are still interested in dealing Herro, the Pistons have an offer that might get them to move.

The Tyler Herro deal may still happen

Herro is from Wisconsin and will get the chance to have his own team if he stays in Milwaukee, so I wouldn’t rule that out.

But I also wouldn’t rule out the Bucks making a separate deal with the Pistons, as Herro doesn’t make a ton of sense for a team now on the timeline Milwaukee is on.

Detroit still isn’t going to budge off their price, and the Bucks may now be more willing to deal with the Pistons one on one.

It’s doubtful the move comes today, or involves the Pistons’ 21st pick, and in fact, it may not involve a pick at all.

The Pistons can send young players, but not picks

Detroit could send Milwaukee a package based around Ron Holland II, Marcus Sasser and Caris LeVert, which may be enough to get the Bucks to move and wouldn’t require the Pistons to send any of their picks, which they may need for other moves or to simply keep adding cheap talent to the roster.

The Bucks were reportedly interested in Holland, but whether he could be the centerpiece of a deal is anyone’s guess. Even Holland may be too steep a price for Herro, who played 33 games last season and only has a year left on his deal at $33 million.

He’s not exactly a hot commodity, so the Pistons should draw a clear line for how much they’re willing to give to Herro and then not cross it.

I should also say that I love Ron Holland and wouldn’t like to see him go, but if we are being real, he’s got a little too much Stanley Johnson in him at this point in his career, and the Pistons already have a better player in Ausar Thompson.

If the Pistons could land Herro without giving up Stewart or their pick in the 2026 draft, it would be a win that would allow them to make additional impact moves.
