The Pistons have seen this movie against the Magic before

And are hoping for the same ending

The Detroit Pistons are down 2-1 in their first-round playoff series against the Orlando Magic, and if that seems familiar to you, it’s because we’ve been here before.

Well, those of us who are old enough have been here before, as this is precisely where the Pistons were after three games against the Magic in the first round of the playoffs back in 2003.

In fact, the Pistons actually went down 3-1 in that series, dropping games one, three and four before heading back to Detroit.

The Pistons eventually won the series in seven games and went on to the Eastern Conference Finals, where they were swept by the Nets.

Coming into the playoffs, making a deep run like that was the goal, so the 2026 Pistons are trying to do what their counterparts did 23 years ago and make it to the Eastern Conference Finals.

But it’s not the only part of that team these Pistons are trying to emulate.

The Pistons hope to be one season away from a title

The 2002-3 Pistons flamed out just short of the NBA Finals, and if that happens again this season, the year will have been a roaring success for Detroit, as no one expected them to win 60 games or be the #1 seed in the East.

If you recall your history from the 2000's, the Pistons won a title the very next season after making the huge acquisition of Rasheed Wallace, who proved to be the final piece of their championship puzzle.

Regardless of what happens in these playoffs, fans will be looking for this iteration of the Pistons to make a similar type of move this summer, as I think most people agree that Detroit is just shy of what they need to win a championship.

Even if the Pistons are able to come back in this series, they’ve been exposed as not having enough scoring, though I do wonder how much this matchup against Orlando is making them look bad in ways others would not have. Orlando is huge, is finally healthy and is good in the same areas Detroit, so this is pretty much their worst-case scenario in the first round, as Orlando is not a bog-standard eighth seed and likely would have been higher if they had been healthy.

If the Pistons do come up short of their goal, they will be looking to make their own Rasheed Wallace-type move this summer to find the final piece that can get them over the hump.

The good news is that most of the #1 seeds who have gone down 2-1 in the first round have come back to win the series, just as the Pistons did back in 2003. Win tonight, and it comes down to a best of three series with home court advantage.

Lose tonight, and the pressure will be on the Pistons in ways that it hasn’t been all season. It’s a hole they’ve climbed out of before, but it’ not something Detroit wants to attempt again, so tonight is a must win.
