Pistons missed chance is actually a frustrating opportunity

Experience matters in the playoffs

The Detroit Pistons have to be kicking themselves after watching the Cleveland Cavaliers lay down for the Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals.

I have no idea if the Pistons could have beaten the Knicks in a seven-game series (I doubt it), but I can guarantee they wouldn’t have gotten swept and certainly wouldn’t have laid down and given up like the Cavaliers did.

It’s always awful to watch the team that just beat you then get eviscerated in the next round, and it would have been nice to see the Pistons make the conference finals even if they ended up losing to the Knicks, who are red hot and haven’t lost a game in over a month.

But It's this very disappointment and frustration that will drive the Pistons deeper into the playoffs next season.

The Pistons didn’t quite have the experience to take down the Cavaliers, now they do

The Pistons didn’t quite have the talent or experience to take out the Cavaliers, but that should change this offseason, when Trajan Langdon will be under pressure to build a more talented roster.

But the biggest change is that the Pistons took their lumps in the playoffs for real, which is something every young team goes through. Remember, OKC was unable to make it out of the second round the season before they won the title.

Getting to a conference final is not easy, especially with two talented and experienced teams in front of you in the Knicks and Cavs, but next year, the experience from this season, as painful as it was, will pay off for Detroit.

Players like Jalen Duren and Ausar Thompson will be better and know exactly what they need to work on this summer to get there. Cade Cunningham will hopefully be fully healthy, or at least not dealing with a collapsed lung and broken rib that definitely had an effect on his fitness level. He was that good with a broken rib, imagine him healthy.

Detroit should have another scorer or two on board to help carry the burden, and most importantly, will still have a bad taste in their mouths that will drive them this offseason and beyond. They will enter next offseason with a clear goal and know what they need to do to reach it.

The Pistons probably feel like an opportunity slipped through their fingers after watching the Cavs get stomped in the Eastern Conference Finals, but they have to use that frustration to motivate themselves to improve, and that’s from the top down.

The Pistons may have lost, but they gained the experience they will need to be able to close out a veteran team the next time they get the chance.
