The Detroit Pistons want to jump into title contention, and the second star to help them get there has long been rumored to be Devin Booker. Detroit has the assets and could offer multiple players, including Tobias Harris and Jaden Ivey, with several first-round draft picks to make it happen before the deadline. The four-time All-Star can’t be traded until Jan. 10 after signing an extension this offseason. Book wants to play his entire career with the Suns, but that could change quickly as Phoenix’s reality sets in.
The Suns traded Kevin Durant and dumped Bradley Beal this offseason. They aim to establish a defensive identity and return to the playoffs, with Booker leading the charge. Phoenix lacks tradeable assets and doesn’t have the talent to compete in the loaded Western Conference. Their only hope to getting back on track is trading Booker for a massive haul.
Kevin O’Connor believes the Suns will explore Booker trades before the Feb. 5 deadline. There are questions about his fit in Detroit and ability to lead a contender, but Booker could reach new heights playing off Cade Cunningham. It will take a monster package to convince the Suns, and this deal could be the one to get it done.
This Pistons trade package for Devin Booker is too good for Suns to refuse
Booker averaged 25.6 points, 7.1 assists, 4.1 rebounds, and 0.9 steals in 37.3 minutes per game last season. He shot 46.1 percent from the field in 2025 and is a career 35.4 percent 3-point shooter.
The 6’6 wing is a walking bucket. He questionably fills the role Detroit has been hoping Jaden Ivey blossoms into. Book fills a lot of gaps, and JB Bickerstaff may be able to get him to tap into his Team USA defense.
The Suns are only making this trade if they can get younger and replenish draft capital. Phoenix still owes picks from the trades to acquire Durant and Beal, despite neither being on their team. They will want multiple first-round picks and young talent.
The Pistons have the perfect developing players in Jaden Ivey and Ron Holland. This trade would mean Ivey doesn’t reach a contract extension before his October deadline. He would be a restricted free agent next summer, but the 23-year-old gives the Suns a potential star guard to build around. Holland fits the Suns' defensive desires and could blossom into a game-changing player in Phoenix. This would be painful for the Pistons, but that is the price of acquiring a prime superstar.
Detroit would have to sign a free agent and would be hard-capped at the first apron after taking back more money than they send out. Those are further penalties of acquiring a game-changer. The Pistons need that second star to jump into title contention, and it will be painful to achieve.
Devin Booker was born in Michigan, and his homecoming would be a fantastic story. He helped the Suns reach the NBA Finals in 2021 and should be eager to compete for a title after missing the postseason entirely last season. This could be a win-win trade. Expect talks to continue and intensify as the deadline approaches.
The Detroit Pistons exited their rebuild by making the playoffs in 2025. Now, it is time to take the next step. That likely means finding a co-star like Booker. The rumors won’t die until Detroit has that piece, so stay tuned.
