The Detroit Pistons made a flurry of moves before their offseason came to a screeching halt, leaving the question of whether Trajan Langdon has done enough to improve his roster.Â
The Pistons are fresh off a 60-win season, so it’s not like they needed a major overhaul, but the playoffs exposed deficiencies in scoring, shooting and ball handling that they had to address.Â
They've made some nice moves on the fringes so far, but is it enough?
The Pistons have improved their shooting, but holes remainÂ
Detroit finally has more than one elite 3-point shooter for possibly the first time in my life. Adding Isaiah Joe was a great pickup, who along with Duncan Robinson, gives the Pistons two of the best high-volume 3-point shooters in the league.Â
Swapping out Tobias Harris for John Collins may be a wash overall, but Collins is the better 3-point shooter and can hopefully increase his volume with an elite creator in Cade Cunningham.Â
Collins may make it easier to keep Ausar Thompson on the floor with Jalen Duren, or without him.
Kevin Huerter is back. Great. Can’t be too excited about this one, but there’s a chance he regains his 3-point touch.
But the Pistons still don’t have a go-to second scorer and still lack ball handlers up and down the roster. None of the players they signed are going to create for themselves, and the Pistons gave up their security blanket in Harris, the only guy other than Cunningham who could reliably create his own shot in the playoffs.Â
I do think the Pistons can count on a big leap from Ausar Thompson, and I wouldn’t be shocked if Daniss Jenkins improves with a more consistent and clearer role in the rotation. Ron Holland is toiling quietly and trying to set himself up for a big leap in year three.
Maybe rookie Ebuka Okorie will shine in his first season, but it’s just as likely that he’s out of the rotation early on, so he’s certainly not a guy the Pistons can count on right away.Â
I don’t hate the Pistons’ offseason, as they’ve addressed one need and didn’t give up any real assets or flexibility to do it, but it would be hard to call it a home run right now, and if the season started today, they probably haven’t done enough to get over the hump in the Eastern Conference.Â
This is all also assuming the Jalen Duren is back with the Pistons next season, so although they’ve made some savvy moves on the fringes, there are still big holes.Â
Are the Pistons finished?Â
Detroit has business to finish with Jalen Duren, but after striking out on some of their top targets, you do have to wonder where the next big move is coming from.Â
Trajan Langdon seems patient enough to go into the season as is if he doesn’t find a deal he likes, which is essentially what happened last offseason.Â
The Pistons are being active, which is great, but we’ll have to wait and see if they’ll be happy with this roster if they don’t make additions.Â
