The Detroit Pistons won 60 games behind defense, effort and chemistry last season, and Javonte Green was a big part of that.Â
The Pistons rewarded him today with a new one-year deal worth $3.95 million, according to beat reporter Omari Sankofa II among others.Â
The Pistons have already watched key parts of their culture disappear this offseason, so it is good to have one of their most reliable role players back even if he isn’t the star some fans are waiting on.Â
Isaiah Stewart is off to Memphis, and Tobias Harris is headed to the Spurs (with some interesting parting comments on the way out), so the Pistons have already lost big parts of their team culture and chemistry from last season.Â
Javonte Green isn’t going to set the world on fire, but he provides one attribute we know Trajan Langdon values.Â
Javonte Green is reliableÂ
One of the big selling points of Tobias Harris was his reliability, as he’s a guy who doesn’t miss many games and plays consistently from night to night.Â
The same could be said of Green, who was the only Pistons player to appear in all 82 regular season games last season.Â
Green was in and out of the rotation in the playoffs and probably will be again if the Pistons get back there, but he’s a guy who will help them get through the grind of the regular season.
Green stepped up time and time again last season when other players were injured, he led the entire NBA in steals off the bench and was able to offer the Pistons options on defense because of his versatility.Â
He also improved his shooting last season, hitting 38 percent from 3-point range and morphing into the Pistons’ most reliable shooter from the corner.Â
Javonte Green isn’t a star, but he’s the kind of junkyard dog that every quality team needs, so it’s good to see him head back to Detroit.Â
This is not the breaking news Pistons fans were hoping forÂ
As nice as it is to have Javonte for another year, it’s not a move that will move the needle for the Pistons in a real way.Â
One thing has nothing to do with the other, but Pistons fans have been waiting (im)patiently for the team to make an impact move, and so far, they’ve gotten nothing but role players who are arguably not any better than the guys they replaced.Â
While other teams in the East are loading up, the Pistons are working the fringes again, an offseason song we’ve heard before.Â
But the minor moves matter too, and keeping Green around to preserve some of the toughness they lost was a solid one.Â
