Detroit is off to another slow start to the year. But what do the deeper numbers suggest?

96% & 90%: Cade Cunningham and Jaden Ivey

Cade is averaging 26.5 points per game, with a season high of 33 already. Ivey is averaging 20.8, his high being 26. Both players have come out of the offseason absolutely on fire, getting it done night in and night out. With his almost 27 points per night, Cade Cunningham is averaging more per night than 96 percent of the league. Ivey is more than 90 percent. These numbers make sense after discussing the usage and combined scoring from the two of Detroit’s stars. Just as a benchmark, Cade is up from 22.7 ppg last season, and Ivey is up from 15.4.

116.2, 108.7, -7.6: Defensive, Offensive and Net Ratings thus far

Throughout four games, Detroit has defensive, offensive, and net ratings of 116.2, 108.7, and -7.6. As a reminder, for defensive rating, the lower the better. Offensively is the inverse, the higher the better. Last year, the Pistons ratings were 118, 109, and -9, so Detroit has used their new roster and coaching staff to better their defense slightly. As a result, their net rating has gotten better as well. This mostly checks out, as the Pistons’ defense was a point of emphasis when hiring new staff members.

These numbers put Detroit 25th in the league defensively, 19th offensively (up from 27th last year), and 27th net-wise, up from 29th last season. Still not good, but a slight improvement.
