The offseason starts with the Giannis Antetokounmpo domino, and while every team in the league waits for a trade to happen, new reports have slowly begun to link the Detroit Pistons to a potential blockbuster deal.
Detroit isn't in pursuit of Antetokounmpo, but their reported interest in Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro, according to NBA Insider Jake Fischer, has added noise to the possibility that the Pistons could step in as a third team to help facilitate a deal for the two-time MVP to land in South Beach.
Obviously, the Pistons landing Herro for a discounted price is a scenario that feels too good to pass up, but considering what's at stake if Detroit gets involved, the reality is that landing Herro may not be worth the end result.
Pistons landing Herro offers another contender to watch with Giannis in Miami
As many know, the sweepstakes for the Greek Freak seem to be down to a two-team race between the Heat and the Boston Celtics.
Several reports have surfaced stating that the Milwaukee Bucks aren't too fond of the package the Heat is offering, and with the team's lack of desire to extend Herro, any potential deal would almost certainly have to include a third team.
Detroit makes sense given their need to find offensive help for Cade Cunningham, but stepping in to help facilitate a deal would result in one of the top players in the league landing in South Beach.
The Heat have consistently been a play-in team over the last few years, but adding Antetokounmpo alongside Bam Adebayo gives them a star duo that could give the Pistons trouble in the future.
However, on the flip side of not helping the Heat in trade talks, Detroit runs the risk of watching Antetokounmpo land in Boston.
Celtics adding Giannis would be a nightmare for Detroit
The ongoing back-and-forth in the media makes it hard to truly grasp if the Celtics are aggressively pursuing Giannis or not, but if they are, it could spell trouble for every team in the league.
Whether or not Jaylen Brown would be in any potential deal or not is up in the air, but all signs point to that being the case, given the financial aspect of a potential deal.
Still, pairing Antetokounmpo alongside Jayson Tatum would form another heavy-hitting duo that the Pistons would have to circle as a threat, especially considering they're already a threat without Giannis.
Landing Herro would be a huge boost for the Pistons, but it feels like, regardless of whether they choose to get involved or not, no outcome of the Giannis deal works in their favor.
