Pistons should be checking in regularly with an old friend

Detroit Pistons’ team president Trajan Langdon should be looking for ways to exploit his old team now that Joe Dumars and Troy Weaver are running the show.

Fans of the Pistons will always love Dumars, who is undoubtedly one of the most important and greatest franchise icons of all time, winning two titles as a player and one as a GM, though the end of his tenure in the front office was a mess.

Less so with Weaver, who went 77-244 as GM of the Pistons, but did draft most of the players who currently make up their core. It was the rest of the job where Weaver struggled, as he continually made baffling moves that didn’t maximize assets.

He may have made such a move already as VP of the Pelicans, as New Orleans traded an unprotected first-round pick to the Hawks for Derik Queen, a trade that was widely panned, as the Pels aren’t likely to be good next season and may have just given away a great pick. Ahhh, sacrificing the future for the present sounds familiar.

The move looks even worse now that Queen is already hurt, so it’s very likely the Pelicans are going to be terrible next season and then not even have a pick to show for it. Troy Weaver, folks!

These types of moves are the reason Trajan Langdon should be in close contact with his old team, as they have a player who would be perfect for Detroit.

Detroit Pistons rumors: The quest for Trey Murphy III

Every team in the league is likely going to be checking in when the Pelicans are at the bottom of the standings, hoping to snag Trey Murphy III in one of Weaver’s signature deals.

For their part, the Pels are saying all the right things according to Sam Vecenie, who reported that the price tag for TMIII is “astronomical,” which means players, multiple picks and swaps.

The Pistons would love to have a young power forward who is an elite shooter to go with Cade Cunningham and do have some advantages if he ends up on the market before the trade deadline.

The first is the many relationships between the two teams. Langdon was recently GM of the Pels, Weaver of the Pistons, and we all know Dumars’ connections to Detroit.

The Pistons also have something no other team has, which is a bunch of players Weaver drafted and loves. Troy Weaver is famous for sticking with “his guys” and the Pistons have several of them.

They also have picks and swaps to offer now that the pick Weaver traded away in 2020 has finally been conveyed.

Could we eventually see a swap that sends Jaden Ivey and a pick to New Orleans? I wouldn’t be shocked.

It will be interesting to see if Langdon is able to leverage his connections to eventually make some kind of deal with his old team.
