If you are like me, then you are absolutely sick to death of hearing about contract negotiations between Jalen Duren and the Detroit Pistons.Â
Just about every pundit in the NBA has chimed in on this now and they all have opinions (based on nothing) about how this will resolve and the lingering effects it will have on Duren as well as the Pistons’ cap sheet.Â
There’s nothing else to talk about, I get it, but we’ve not heard anything new in a while, and unless the person giving the information was in the room when it happened, I really don’t care.Â
What I do know is that regular working-class fans are getting sick of hearing billionaires argue with millionaires over dollar amounts most of us can’t fathom.Â
This is a bad look for the Pistons at this timeÂ
I don’t want to get too serious here, but It's hard to get that worked up about the machinations of a multi-billion-dollar playground given the current state of the world.Â
There are a lot of people struggling with the price of fuel and groceries, so hearing about a 22-year-old millionaire holding out for more money than they will see in their lifetimes may as well be something out of a science fiction movie.Â
Will he take $30 million a year to play basketball or 35? Could he get $40 million?!? I can tell you this, it won’t affect my bank account either way, so while I am happy for Duren to get paid, it’s hard to be emotionally invested and I am sure many fans feel the same.Â
But I am not putting this all on Duren by any stretch. The teams in the NBA clearly conspired to keep salaries for non-superstars down in the last CBA. The players agreed to it, so you can’t only blame the owners and league, but restricted free agency has become an ugly war now, when it used to be a formality.Â
It’s hard to care about the oligarch owners crying poor when just saw a team sell for $12.5 billion, FAR more than its revenue would justify or that any credible person would tell you it’s worth.Â
There are billionaires lined up to buy these teams at inflated prices (you have to wonder why), so it’s even harder for me to care about them paying a luxury tax considering most of them don’t pay taxes at all. They act as if going into the tax will cost them fingers and toes instead of the dollars they have a limitless supply of.
Long story short, I’m sick of listening to million and billionaires whine while the rest of us grind it out in the real world, so enough already. We know Duren is going to sign and if it costs Tom Gores a few more bucks, or Duren gets 32 instead of 40, I really couldn’t care less.Â
I love hoops and love the Pistons, but eventually fans are going to get sick of this mess, and I wouldn’t be shocked if Duren heard a few boos next season if this continues to drag out. Save a few for Gores too.
