Despite their best efforts, the Pistons keep striking out in their pursuits to add a big star this offseason, with the latest rumors circulating a deal to send Kevin Durant to Detroit. However, this deal, just like every other trade so far to add some star power in Detroit, was eventually shot down. It's unfortunately becoming a familiar trend and revealing a level of desperation from the Pistons to add a co-star alongside Cade Cunningham.

Durant joins a long list of almosts for the Pistons

Elsewhere in the offseason, the Pistons were also linked to big trade targets like Kawhi Leonard and Jaylen Brown but ultimately ended up with neither. Perhaps the worst part of their misses is where those stars eventually ended up - on direct rivals to the Pistons in the East. Detroit's inability to capitalize on its own star trade while other East contenders stock up is adding concerns to the Pistons' playoff woes.

It's becoming harder to see any positives in the Pistons' trade rumors when every one ends the same way. Sure, it's great that the Pistons are still actively looking to add a star but participation points only go so far if the front office can't actually secure a deal. Considering where the Pistons are in their own progress and Cade Cunningham's development, it's high time to pull the trigger and add another major piece.

Last season, the Pistons took a massive unexpected leap to win 60 games and finish as the top seed in the East. They ultimately fell one game short of the conference finals and played the eventual champion Knicks extremely well in the regular season. Cade himself finished First Team All-NBA and had a dominant individual playoff run, but ran out of gas by the final game of Round 2.

Kevin Durant would be an ideal fit right now

Adding Durant would obviously take pressure off Cade, but his impact could go beyond just his direct scoring. Despite not racking up a ton of assists throughout his career, Durant has been a good playmaker through his sheer gravity and the defensive attention he demands. Pairing him with Cade, one of the best playmakers in the Association today, would unlock a beautiful team game. Both players are also adept at hitting tough shots over tight coverage, so they could thrive even if the Pistons have limited spacing with players like Ausar Thompson and Jalen Duren.

Durant is certainly on the older side at age 37, but he could still have a couple All-NBA seasons left - and that might be enough to get the Pistons a title before he declines significantly. Even if the original trade rumors involving Jaylen Brown have died out, the Pistons might still want to pursue Durant.
