According to Marc Stein of The Stein Line, former Detroit Pistons head coach Dwane Casey is a leading candidate to be the new head coach of BC Roma SPQR, an Italian club co-founded by former Mavericks GM Donnie Nelson and Luka Doncic. Casey was the head coach in Detroit from 2018 to 2023, making one playoff appearance (in his first year).
After his tenure as head coach of the Pistons came to an end, he transitioned into a role in the team’s front office. But now, he’s looking to branch back out into the coaching world. Meanwhile, for BC Roma SPQR, landing a coach with a resume as impressive as Casey’s would be a pretty great first hire.
The Pistons have to be thrilled with who they have leading the way right now – JB Bickerstaff – but it’s cool to see their former coach finding a new home.

Following Casey’s departure, the Pistons hired Monty Williams. However, that infamous era lasted just one season before they decided to hire Bickerstaff, who has overseen Detroit’s recent surge forward.
Detroit wasn’t Casey’s first stop, though. He enjoyed a long, expansive coaching career before getting to the Pistons, and it wasn’t just in the NBA, either.
Casey coached teams dating back to his teenage years, but his first professional gig was as an assistant at Kentucky all the way back in 1979.
Following a few years as an assistant in college for Kentucky, Western Kentucky, and then Kentucky again, Casey spent five years coaching two different Japanese women’s basketball teams.
He then finally made the leap to the NBA in 1994 as an assistant for the Seattle Supersonics. Shortly after, he got his first chance as a head coach, leading the Minnesota Timberwolves from 2005-2007.
Casey then joined the Dallas Mavericks as an assistant, winning a championship with them in 2011 before joining the Toronto Raptors as their new head coach that same year.
He won Coach of the Year in Toronto but was famously fired the same year, and then he became the head coach of the Detroit Pistons.
Meanwhile, BC Roma SPQR was just founded in 2026. It will compete in Lega Basket Serie A, which is the highest level of basketball in Italy.
Casey hasn’t been a coach in three years now, but he has plenty of experience to make the jump back to the bench. And what better place to get back into things than a brand new club on which he can truly leave his mark.
