Jalen Duren has been on a tear this season and seems like a lock now for an All-NBA selection. Not only that, but Duren will also receive a huge contract extension from the Pistons that could provide sticker shock for some fans. His hard work keep the Pistons afloat with Cade Cunningham sidelined all but sealed his long-term role in Detroit.

Jalen Duren has earned himself a monster contract

Duren made a bold move last summer betting on himself by declining the Pistons' offers for an extension during his restricted free agency. And he lived up to his own belief by producing an All-Star and All-NBA campaign that could also earn him Most Improved Player honors. His growth this season has been remarkable in all areas, but especially as a go-to scorer and offensive hub.

Despite making few changes to the roster from last season, the Pistons have seen much more success this season thanks to internal growth. The development from Duren and his fellow young stars has helped the Pistons feel no regret about any offseason moves. This regular season has spoken for itself, and the core will have even more opportunity to prove themselves in the playoffs.

No matter the circumstance or lineup, Duren has been consistently excellent for the Pistons this season. He's played his part in the team's dominant defense while also elevating the offense. His substantial scoring jump has helped the Pistons succeed even in the most defensively slanted lineups.

The counting stats aren't everything but they do tell a clear story. Duren has averaged nearly 20 points and 11 rebounds per game this season, up from 12 points and 10 rebounds last season with only 2 more minutes per game. His two-way impact and interior dominance has set the tone for Detroit's identity and winning formula.

Duren's next contract could complicate the Pistons' salary sheet

However, for all of Duren's production, bumping him up to a star contract will inevitably make team-building a harder exercise for the Pistons' front office. They will likely also want to extend Ausar Thompson (who will be a restricted free agent otherwise) this offseason. Adding both contract extensions in one summer will be a huge change for the Pistons, who have operated with few large contracts in recent years.

If he makes All-NBA, Duren would be eligible for a massive 5-year/$287 million extension. While he's unlikely to get that full amount, it shows the ballpark that his deal could reach. The Pistons could have a summer of hard negotiations ahead, but they will do everything in their power to keep Duren on a longer-term deal. But paying him on a big contract can make it harder to build their team elsewhere.
