Ron Holland II is one of the biggest wildcards for the Detroit Pistons next season, and the new additions to the roster should help his progress.
Holland is entering a crucial third season, and though he’s been a quality defender and maker of chaos, he needs to make some kind of offensive strides if he wants to stay part of the future plans.
By all accounts, Holland has been in the gym non-stop all summer, so I do think we’ll see some exciting results.
Most people focus on his shooting, as he’s a good foul shooter with competent form, so the corner 3-ball should eventually be a weapon for him. It’s probably not realistic to think he’s going to make that leap in one offseason, but it would be great for Holland to at least creep towards league average from long range.
Shooting isn’t the only area where Holland can improve, as he also needs to be a better attacker and new addition Isaiah Joe should help.
The Pistons have more spacing on the bench for Ron Holland to exploit
Last year the Pistons didn’t really have much scoring or shooting off the bench. After the Malik Beasley fiasco, they were left turning to Duncan Robinson, who was the only shooter teams had to worry about.
This year, the Pistons can roll out a bench lineup with multiple shooters, and Holland should be one of the biggest beneficiaries of this.
Right now, teams are just going to sag off Holland and let him shoot, but with more spacing and gravity coming off the bench with him, he should be in a better spot to attack.
Holland is not a creator with the ball, but he can attack space and usually does it aggressively. Holland converted over 62 percent of his shots around the rim, so when defenses are chasing Isaiah Joe around and leaving Holland open, he needs to attack in a straight line and try to dunk it on their heads.
The new shooters (Joe and Prince) are guys defenses have to pay attention to, and Holland can take advantage as a cutter and also by attacking the space in front of him or when defenders are scrambling.
We’ve talked a lot about how the additional shooting will help Cade Cunningham and Ausar Thompson, but Isaiah Joe should also make things easier for Ron Holland off the bench.
Hopefully Holland has put on some additional strength and has worked on attacking defenses that are in motion, which they will be a lot more next season with multiple shooters coming off the bench instead of none.
Holland wasn't always able to take advantage of what teams were giving him last season, but a revamped bench around him should make it easier for him to attack.
