Jalen Duren’s bold claim doesn’t sit right

Jalen Duren is the last player who should be talking right now.

Jalen Duren is making bold claims at the most inopportune time, and it feels ironic given he's one of the biggest reasons to blame for the Detroit Pistons being on the brink of elimination.

The Pistons trail the Orlando Magic 3-1 in the first round of the NBA Playoffs, and the lackluster play of Duren has put them in that position.

And while fans may be searching for any bit of hope they can find, searching for confidence from their starting big man is probably the last place they'll be looking for it.

Despite that, it hasn't stopped Duren from voicing his opinions about how he believes Detroit stacks up to the No. 8-seeded Magic, who are seemingly having their way wth the Pistons through four games.

Jalen Duren says Pistons are the better team

If we're talking about someone who simply can't read a room, it may be Duren after his comments following the team's recent loss:

Sure, having confidence in your squad is one thing, but making this claim after being dominated in nearly every game throughout this round one series is certainly an option.

Duren is averaging 9.8 points and 8.3 rebounds throughout the series, while shooting 46.9% from the floor in 30.8 minutes per game, and while that may not be considered bad to some, given the 22-year-old was expected to be the No. 2 scoring option when the postseason began, it's the absolute worst-case scenario for the Pistons.

Obviously, the series isn't over, and if the Pistons can defend home court in Game 5, they could put the pressure on the Magic in Game 6.

To do that, though, Duren has to back up his claim for the Motor City squad to flip the momentum.

Duren has no choice but to back his claim up

Duren isn't the only reason for the hole the Pistons find themselves in, but he's certainly among the biggest.

The bench needs to be better, and head coach J.B. Bickerstaff has to find a way to make the proper adjustments.

Still, if Detroit plans to get back into this series, it starts with the Pistons figuring out a way to get the same production from Duren that they got during the regular season.

Without that version of their star big man, it's hard to imagine that the Pistons can come back from a 3-1 deficit.

If he can back it up though, his poor timing on the claim will be forgiven, and it could turn into one of the best vows of confidence we've seen in recent memory.

Unfortunately, it's safe to say that's a big IF.
