The first round of the 2026 NBA Playoffs was perhaps the worst stretch of Jalen Duren's four-year Detroit Pistons career. Whether or not he's played worse at another point in time, all eyes were on Duren as Detroit fell behind 3-1 to the No. 8 seed Orlando Magic and flirted with disaster.
Though Duren is still struggling to make shots, he's finally found the road to redemption after turning in a massive Game 1 performance in the second round.
Detroit defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 111-101 to jump out to a 1-0 series lead. It was a welcome change after the Pistons dropped Game 1 of their first-round series to the Magic by a nearly identical score of 112-101.
Though it was a wonderfully gritty team performance and result, Duren was unavoidably brilliant with the game on the line and set the tone in ways other than scoring.
Duren finished with 11 points on 4-of-11 shooting, which does little to silence the skeptics who have justifiably highlighted his poor scoring numbers in the 2026 Playoffs. Duren averaged 10.6 points per game during the first round, which was a catastrophic decline from the 19.5 he managed during the regular season.
What makes Duren's Game 1 performance so significant, however, is the simple fact that he made winning plays throughout the clash with Cleveland and ultimately helped put the win away.
Jalen Duren struggles to score, but dominates Game 1 in other areas
Duren finished Game 1 with 11 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, and two blocks. His success as a playmaker, shot-blocker, and rebounder would've been reason enough to be at least partly encouraged by what he managed against All-Star bigs Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley.
What made Duren's performance so profound, however, was that he pulled down seven offensive rebounds and played a direct role in breaking Detroit's cold spells.
It must also be noted that Duren posted six points and two assists during the fourth quarter alone. His off-ball activity created openings that Cade Cunningham exploited with his passing, and his playmaking set up two pivotal Duncan Robinson buckets.
The points Duren scored himself brought the score from 93-93 with 4:51 remaining to 99-93 with 3:54 left in the fourth quarter.
On the other end of the floor, Duren's two blocks only scratch the surface of how important he was. Cleveland struggled to generate consistent interior offense, with Allen in specific posting two points and three rebounds in 18 minutes just one game after going off to the tune of 22 and 19.
With clutch scoring, elite offensive rebounding, and tone-setting defense, Duren has finally set a course on the road to postseason redemption.
