Jalen Duren needs Pistons to get Cade Cunningham help more than anyone

The Detroit Pistons need to add offensive talent alongside Cade Cunningham. But Jalen Duren may need that addition more than anyone. Because the difference between Duren being a second offensive option vs. a third option is huge. He’s much better suited as a third option, as evidenced by this year’s playoffs.

During the Pistons’ postseason run this season, Duren struggled mightily. His offense was heavily criticized, as Cunningham was often left alone as the only Pistons player who could create offense. Duren was torn to shreds on social media, but moving forward, it just seems like he’ll be better suited as a third offensive option.

So, while Cunningham definitely needs the help, Duren does, too.

Jalen Duren needs more help as much as Cade Cunningham

At his best, Duren is an elite pick-and-roll threat and a big body down low. His offense primarily stems from his chemistry with Cunningham, who will have the ball in his hands most of the time.

But if he’s not getting to his spots, going up strong, and finding ways to bully opponents in the paint, then he’s going to struggle to generate points for the Pistons’ offense.

And when that happens, you get what happened in the playoffs this season – a complete lack of consistent offensive production that hurts the Pistons and leaves Cunningham without any help.

Detroit was left with Tobias Harris, Daniss Jenkins, and, at times, even Caris LeVert as its second offensive choice behind Cunningham during the postseason. That’s certainly not an ideal situation to be in.

So, this summer, it’s up to the Pistons to find a way to add an extra offensive creator. Someone who can take the pressure off Cunningham in the playoffs, so he doesn’t have to do everything himself.

Tyler Herro has been floated as a potential trade target if the Miami Heat end up trading him. Trey Murphy III could be another option for the Pistons to consider.

Not only will those players push Duren down the offensive pecking order – which is good for him – but they should also help create more space for the Pistons big man to work.

And the more space Duren has to score and play his own game, the better, because he’s clearly not an amazing individual offensive creator, especially not in the postseason.

So, while adding another offensive talent will greatly benefit Cunningham, it will also end up taking a ton of pressure off of Duren on that end of the court.
