The Detroit Pistons are in the middle of a Jalen Duren problem. The big man is still a restricted free agent, and with less than two weeks left until the start of training camp, the Pistons need to figure something out. Realistically speaking, it may be smart for the Pistons to copy the moves that the New York Knicks just made, signing guys like James Wiseman and Drew Eubanks.
At this point, it would be smart for the Pistons to explore the idea of adding more center depth. Right now, the only centers they have on the roster outside of Duren, who, again, has yet to sign, are Paul Reed, Ugonna Onyenso, and Isaac Jones. And the latter two of those guys are on two-way contracts.
So, as training camp gets closer and closer, it could be smart for the Pistons to sign some semi-reliable center options to training camp deals just in case the Duren situation falls even flatter than it already has.
Pistons should copy Knicks' latest moves to help Jalen Duren
Wiseman and Eubanks aren't world beaters. There's a good chance that neither of them even makes the Knicks roster. But at the very least, they are relatively capable depth centerpieces.
And with how shaky the Duren situation is right now, it would be very worthwhile for the Pistons to at least have a bit more center depth on their roster. Because right now, things look rough.
Reed played great in the playoffs last year for the Pistons. As a result, the Pistons intentionally went into the offseason looking to give him a larger role because they believe in what he can do.
That's part of the reason that they decided to trade Isaiah Stewart to the Memphis Grizzlies this summer. They were investing in Reed as the primary backup center behind Duren.
But now, as the Duren situation has yet to be resolved, Reed is looking at an even larger role than the one he was originally expected to play. So, the Pistons should get more depth behind him.
Onyenso has never played an NBA minute, and Jones has been a two-way guy for most of his career. So, signing a veteran or even a younger player who has at least played in the NBA before could be smart.
Even if the Pistons only sign guys to training camp deals, it would at least give them other options to look at for the center position. At this point, they need at least that.
So, perhaps it would be smart for them to copy what the Knicks have done.
