The Pistons have a golden opportunity to avenge their head coach by eliminating the Cavaliers in the second round of the playoffs. The matchup promises to be another tough one for Detroit, but they should have a good gameplan to match up with Cleveland. This hotly-anticipated showdown comes just two years after the Cavs fired JB Bickerstaff as head coach, and he got a new start with the Pistons.

JB Bickerstaff can get the last laugh over his old team

Bickerstaff has been a perfect fit for the Pistons since arriving in Detroit. He's led the Pistons on an incredible rebuild, just as he did for the Cavaliers when he first took over in Cleveland. But the biggest knock against him was always that he couldn't get solid teams over the hump to being elite.

The Pistons appeared to shake that Bickerstaff stereotype with their dominant regular season, but put him back in an uncertain position with their early playoff struggles. However, Detroit was able to advance past the first round and now has its eyes set on a deep playoff run with Bickerstaff at the helm. They also expressed their confidence in their head coach by quickly signing him to an extension on Monday.

Bickerstaff helped his young team weather a tough first-round series with some key adjustments. By overcoming an early deficit and implementing subtle changes to the Pistons' approach, Bickerstaff attacked another one of his biggest criticisms. He's often been labeled a bad playoff coach who's late to make necessary adjustments, which contributed to his firing from the Cavaliers.

Bickerstaff will have to face his loudest critics head-on

But now Bickerstaff will have the chance to prove that notion false against the very team that deployed it against him so recently. Regardless of which team wins this second-round series, it's sure to be a tactical battlefield between the head coaches. In order for the Pistons to advance, Bickerstaff will inevitably need to make smart adjustments to counter the Cavaliers' advantages.

The Pistons will likely have the defensive chops to limit Cleveland's offense effectively, but the other side of this matchup will be a challenge. The Cavaliers frequently deploy a double-big lineup that can shut down the paint and force opponents to make outside shots - an obvious weakness for the Pistons. Bickerstaff will need to find creative ways to get around this clear blockade and score enough points to win games.

The Cavaliers have already proven to be a nightmare matchup for the Pistons in the regular season, including Detroit's biggest loss of the season back in October. But the Pistons are a different team now and they'll have extra playoff motivation playing for their coach's honor.
