Knicks are proving Pistons need to play copycat to help Cade Cunningham

The New York Knicks' trade-the-picks approach is one that the Detroit Pistons should look to copy as soon as this summer.

The New York Knicks just won Game 2 against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Josh Hart led the way with 26 points. Mikal Bridges gave the Knicks awesome minutes. Karl-Anthony Towns did his job well. OG Anunoby produced. Add in Jalen Brunson, and the whole Knicks starting five was great. Now, the Detroit Pistons need to copy them. Trade the picks. Build a winner.

New York has copied the LA Rams’ decision-making process when it comes to roster building. Who cares about picks? Trade the picks. Trade them all if it means winning a championship. The Knicks still have a while to go before they get there, but the Pistons need to learn from their current success.

If the Pistons want to put a championship-caliber team around Cade Cunningham, they need to play copycat. Copy the Knicks. Trade picks.

Pistons should not be afraid to trade picks this summer (just like the Knicks weren't)

This postseason, the Pistons ran into a bunch of different problems. But the biggest one by far was their lack of offensive production alongside Cunningham, who carried the load on that end.

Had the Knicks decided to hoard their picks and play things safe, Brunson could be in a similar position right now. He may not have the type of support he currently does.

New York gave up picks in the deal to get Towns. They gave a pick in the deal that brought Hart to the Knicks. And most famously, they gave up a ton of picks in the deal that landed them Bridges.

But now, they are in their second straight Eastern Conference finals, and they are up 2-0 this time around. They have a real chance to make the NBA Finals, and from there, anything can happen.

The Pistons are in the early stages of their time being a big dog in the East. Cunningham is still only 24 years old. Detroit has plenty of time to build around him.

But if they want to build a true title contender, copying the Knicks’ strategy of trading picks for high-level players may be the best way to go, especially while they have the contracts to pair them with.

Duncan Robinson and Caris LeVert’s contracts could net the Pistons a very good player in a trade if they attached enough picks in the deal. That’s what the Knicks did. That’s what the Pistons should do.

It’s a copycat league. If you want to be the best, you often have to mimic the best. And right now, it looks like the Knicks are on a one-way track to being the best team in the East.

So, as the Pistons look to improve this summer, they should be willing to trade picks to get to where they want to be.
