Knicks may be gifting Pistons perfect Jalen Duren backup plan in free agency

The Detroit Pistons should target Mitchell Robinson in free agency this summer.

The Detroit Pistons have some serious work to do this summer. First and foremost, they need to find some offensive help for Cade Cunningham. But now that Isaiah Stewart is gone, they also need to look for some backup help behind Jalen Duren (and, in theory, alongside Paul Reed). Stealing Mitchell Robinson from the New York Knicks could be a good idea.

Robinson has been a big part of the Knicks’ success for years, particularly in a backup role. His offensive rebounding and interior defense would be great additions to the Pistons’ gritty lineup. If the Pistons could snag him in free agency, he would be a nice option to have behind Duren heading into next season.

Plus, they would be weakening an Eastern Conference opponent at the same time.

Recent reports have revealed that Robinson is likely to leave the Knicks in free agency. And if that’s the case, the Pistons should be one of the top teams in line to land him.

Duren is going to go into next season as the Pistons’ starting center. They’re almost certainly going to hand him a monster contract extension, but they still need to add some depth behind him.

After the playoff run he enjoyed in the postseason, Reed earned some additional opportunities next season. He was great in the playoffs, at times even outplaying Duren and Stewart.

But the Pistons still need more help at the center position. They can’t roll into next year with only Duren and Reed as their only options at the center positions. Robinson could be an answer.

As noted, Robinson is an elite offensive rebounder. Adding that type of glass cleaning alongside the rest of the Pistons’ long, athletic lineup would help them generate more possessions.

Meanwhile, his defense down low would give the Pistons a nice back line. Duren is a great center, but Robinson is bigger. His size would be a nice addition to the roster, too.

Again, the Pistons have to add offense. Their lack of creation outside of Cunningham was one of the biggest reasons they were bounced by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round (and struggled to get by the Orlando Magic in Round 1).

But the big man position is one of need as well. They need more depth, especially now that their primary regular-season backup (Stewart) is also out the door.

Robinson would be a great option for the Pistons to pursue this summer.
