NBA rookie extensions and opportunities for the Pistons

There were some surprises yesterday when it came to who got extensions and who didn’t. There were also some unique contracts that we will likely see more of in the NBA under the new apron rules.

Here are the key players who signed extensions yesterday:

Player

Contract

Alperen Sengun

5 years/$185 million

Moses Moody

3 years/$39 million

Trey Murphy III

4 years/$112 million

Jalen Green

3 years/$106 million

Jalen Suggs

5 years/$150 million

Corey Kispert

4 years/$54 million

Jaden Hardy

3 years/$18 million

Jalen Johnson

5 years/$150 million

Aaron Gordon

4 years/$113 million

Future NBA parents: Could you kindly name your children something other than Jalen or Jaden? Sheesh.

Jalen Green was the first player to sign a rookie 2+1 extensions which has just two guaranteed years plus a player option. I like this, as both the team and player are not locked into a long-term deal.

Second contracts are generally a huge act of faith in the NBA, as you are giving max deals to players who are not yet stars and this helps mitigate that risk while giving the player a chance to prove himself and get a big payday while he is still in his prime.

The biggest names missing from the list is Jonathan Kuminga, who was not able to reach an agreement with the Warriors. It won't be surprising to see him traded this season.

There were also extensions that could lead to financial issues down the road for certain teams and the Detroit Pistons may be able to take advantage.
