As the Detroit Pistons get ready to evaluate their options at the trade deadline, they should take a long, hard look at Chicago Bulls guard Ayo Dosunmu. Getting a guy like Derrick White on the team would be the absolute dream for Detroit, but since there aren’t many players like that available, Dosunmu may be the next best thing, and nobody seems to be discussing him as an option.
The Bulls got off to a hot start this season but have since cooled way down. However, Dosunmu’s numbers haven’t dipped that much. In fact, he’s having the exact type of season that would be perfect next to Cade Cunningham and the rest of the Pistons’ lineup.
Dosunmu could be the missing piece that would elevate Detroit to a legitimate Finals threat.
The Pistons should trade for Ayo Dosunmu
Building a championship-caliber roster is about more than assembling talent. Sure, that’s a big part of it, but what may be even more important is the fit of everyone on the roster.
The Pistons already have their franchise superstar. Cunningham is one of the best players in the league. A legitimate MVP-caliber player. He runs the show in Detroit.
They have their No. 2. Jalen Duren is playing like an All-Star this season. They have defense. Ausar Thompson and Isaiah Stewart have that on lock. They have three-point shooting. Duncan Robinson has been a revelation for the Pistons this year.
But there’s still room for the Pistons to improve. Bringing in a 3-and-D guard who can take on defensive assignments and space the floor offensively next to Cunningham would be perfect.
Thompson is prone to being played off the floor because of his subpar offense, and the same can be said about Robinson and his defense.
That’s where Dosunmu could come into play. And the pathway to Detroit landing him in a deal is fairly straightforward. Moving Paul Reed for Dosunmu works financially, and the Pistons could throw in as much draft capital as the Bulls would need to make the deal work.
Or maybe they would want back someone like Marcus Sasser, Chaz Lanier, or Bobi Klintman. But no matter which one of those types of players the Bulls would want, getting Dosunmu could be worth it for Detroit.
So far this season, Dosunmu has appeared in 20 games for Chicago, starting seven of them and playing a career-high 27.8 minutes per contest. He has averaged 15.2 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 3.2 assists while shooting 51.9% from the floor and 47.5% from deep on 4.0 three-point attempts per contest.
Getting him would be a slam dunk for the Pistons.
